Bringing the Lost City of the Incas to Life Through an Immersive Digital Experience

DESIGNING WITH TIME TRAVEL

MACHU PICCHU EXHIBIT LANDING PAGE

Objective

World Heritage Exhibitions is dedicated to creating extraordinary museum experiences that transport visitors across cultures, civilizations, and centuries of human history. When preparing an exhibition centered around Machu Picchu, one of the world’s most iconic archaeological treasures, the organization sought a digital experience capable of extending that sense of discovery beyond the museum walls.

The challenge was to create a microsite that would not simply provide information about the exhibition, but immerse visitors in the wonder, mystery, and grandeur of the ancient Incan city.

World Heritage Exhibitions partnered with Celsius Marketing & Interactive to develop a digital experience that would educate, inspire, and build anticipation for the exhibition while honoring one of the world’s most remarkable cultural landmarks.

Key objectives included:

  • Create an immersive digital companion to the exhibition
  • Increase awareness and interest among prospective visitors
  • Educate audiences about Machu Picchu and Incan civilization
  • Extend the exhibition experience beyond the physical museum
  • Showcase exhibition content in an engaging and memorable format
  • Utilize multimedia storytelling to create emotional impact
  • Develop a visually distinctive microsite experience

Celsius Marketing took visitors on a time travel adventure to 1450 Peru to create an immersive museum exhibition microsite featuring Machu Picchu. Teaming up with World Heritage Exhibitions, we aimed to teleport visitors to the Incan city, surrounded by clouds and high up in the mountains. Our innovative blend of video, imagery, and practical information has pushed design boundaries and is sure to provide a memorable user experience. Get ready to explore the jewel of the Southern Hemisphere!

Strategy

Celsius approached the project as more than a traditional website.

The goal was to create a digital journey.

Rather than presenting visitors with a series of informational pages, the team envisioned an experience that would evoke the feeling of standing high in the Andes Mountains, surrounded by clouds and ancient stone architecture, exploring one of the greatest archaeological discoveries in history.

The strategy focused on transporting visitors back in time while maintaining a seamless user experience.

The creative vision centered on three key ideas:

Immersion

Create an environment that captures the atmosphere and mystique of Machu Picchu.

Education

Present historical information in a compelling and accessible format.

Exploration

Encourage visitors to engage with content in a way that mirrors the spirit of discovery that defines the exhibition itself.

The result would be a microsite designed to spark curiosity and deepen engagement long before visitors entered the museum.

Solution

Celsius developed a fully customized microsite that blended cinematic visuals, interactive storytelling, and educational content into a cohesive digital experience.

Immersive Website Design

The visual design was inspired by the breathtaking landscapes surrounding Machu Picchu.

Visitors are welcomed into an environment featuring:

  • Mountain vistas
  • Atmospheric cloud effects
  • Rich historical imagery
  • Dynamic visual transitions
  • Layered storytelling experiences

The design helped establish an emotional connection with the destination while reinforcing the exhibition’s sense of wonder and exploration.

Multimedia Storytelling

To create a more engaging experience, Celsius incorporated a variety of media formats throughout the microsite.

These included:

  • Video content
  • Historical imagery
  • Interactive content elements
  • Exhibition photography
  • Educational narratives

The combination of media types created a more immersive experience than traditional museum websites while appealing to a broad range of audiences.

Exhibition Information Architecture

While visual storytelling was central to the experience, functionality remained equally important.

The microsite was carefully organized to provide easy access to:

  • Exhibition details
  • Educational resources
  • Visitor information
  • Historical context
  • Event and venue information

This balance between inspiration and practicality ensured that visitors could quickly find what they needed while remaining engaged with the content.

Experience-Driven Design

Every aspect of the site was developed to support the larger exhibition narrative.

The result was a digital environment that complemented the museum experience rather than simply promoting it.

By integrating educational content directly into the visual storytelling experience, the microsite encouraged visitors to explore, learn, and connect with the history of Machu Picchu in meaningful ways.

Key Outcomes

The microsite successfully extended the exhibition experience into the digital world while creating a memorable platform for audience engagement.

Brand Impact

  • Elevated the presentation of the exhibition through immersive digital storytelling
  • Created a distinctive online experience unlike traditional museum websites
  • Strengthened audience engagement before and after exhibition visits
  • Enhanced the perceived value of the exhibition experience

Visitor Experience

  • Increased accessibility to educational content
  • Simplified access to exhibition information
  • Created deeper emotional connections with the subject matter
  • Encouraged exploration and interaction through multimedia content

Strategic Impact

Museums preserve history.

Great digital experiences bring it to life.

By combining immersive design, multimedia storytelling, educational content, and innovative user experience principles, Celsius helped World Heritage Exhibitions create a microsite that captured the spirit of one of humanity’s greatest cultural treasures.

The result was more than an exhibition website. It was a digital expedition into the clouds of the Andes, inviting visitors to discover the history, mystery, and enduring legacy of Machu Picchu long before they stepped inside the exhibit itself.
